Summary |
||
|
The past decade of my professional career, has encompassed a few
different companies with the same processes applied towards job functionality
and performance. A majority of the
work has been product development testing and general testing cross the life
of a product. Streamlining testing
procedures and also covering the basics in testing from outsourced or second
party vendors. While at Concord Camera, the main job function was to put into place a
set of testing procedures to cover the basics of the products functionality.
This testing covered both in-house manufactured products and outsourced
products. Product testing covers many
different arenas, from electrical, mechanical, software to general usage
testing. Developing procedures in
conjunction with the different departments to cover the basics. Including streamlining of the testing that
would provide secondary information about the product to not only the project
development team, but the individual departments. From the secondary information, patterns
emerged to allow for project management and departments to have vendors fix
repeating problems and required the vendor to submit product testing results
with their samples. Working across departments and cultures is always challenging at
first, but after a few weeks the cross departmental skill matrix results
start to build an overall effective communication system not only between
departments but between vendors, engineering departments and test
engineers. This allows for problems
to be identified and fixed quickly and also allows for more comparison
product sampling and testing results to be provided to project management and
other team members, providing competitor product information in a non
intrusive manner. The most important challenge in any system is providing good
communication and testing results to everyone involved and tracking of the
information so everything is supplied in the projects timeline. While at Concord and NASA, a major part of
getting things in place was to first develop and maintain a good
secondary-tracking system just for testing, and making sure all the appropriate
departments and personal had access to the information. At
Microsoft’s Zune 3rd Party Accessories Group, I have utilized my
background skills in developing testing procedures, product specifications
and an Approval Process Gating System for incoming products. Working with over two dozen vendors,
assuring their products are tested to meet the requirements for their
approval to ship a branded “Designed for Zune” product. I’ve also brought on board a secondary
testing house, qualifying them with the testing procedures and specifications
to perform a specific set of qualification tests for various products. |
